Reading Reflection #1

The Taker

Alma Katsu

Pages #45-62

While reading my book this time it was rather easy for me to find text connections. It actually was easy to make a text to self-connection reading because during one of Lanny’s flash backs, a character that was being introduced turned out to have the same last name as my boyfriend. The two of then share the last name Poirier. So that text to self was easy.

There were many things while reading, that I found myself commenting on this time. A lot of things were being told, we find out so much background story to the main character Luke. I found out that Luke is still mourning his mother’s death which only happened a short time ago. When his mother died he had a pretty traumatic experience, her body began to move again after 15 minutes of her heart not beating. She opened her eyes and looked at Luke and her hand began to squeeze his back. Luke wasn’t sure this was the cause of something supernatural or not. Luke’s mother died just after he went through a really hard divorce with his wife. But what made matters worse was that his mother passed away in the very hospital he works at. Another one of the things I found myself commenting on was the fact that Lanny just out right told Luke and the police that she stabbed a man to death and left his body in the middle of the woods.

I believe what makes Luke want Lanny for is the fact that she is immortal. Immortality is something almost everyone thinks of having. To live forever would be quit something to achieve. I don’t think it’s just the fact she is beautiful, it’s the combination of these two things. I think in the end Luke will try and become whatever Lanny is.

What immortality means in this setting of this book, is that these people who are like Lanny have been this way since they settled this town. The town was helped shaped by these people; the town is the way it is because of them. They made it what it is today in the present time.

  1. If you had the chance to be immortal, would you take it? Why? Why not?
